The strangest thing happened to me—I had a dream about waiting for an elevator. At first glance, it seemed like nothing, just another random dream. But when I woke up, I felt shaken, almost as if I’d had a nightmare. My chest was tight, and panic began to creep in. I couldn’t shake the frustration I felt in the dream, and the more I thought about it, the more I realized it wasn’t just a dream. It was a message.
In this dream, I was standing in front of an elevator, waiting for it to arrive. The wait felt endless. I stood there, watching the numbers light up and change, signaling the elevator’s slow descent to my floor. And with every passing second, my frustration grew. I wasn’t doing anything but standing there, staring at the numbers, growing more impatient by the moment.
I remember thinking, Why is this taking so long? Why hasn’t it arrived yet? But instead of using that time to prepare—gathering my things, getting ready to step on when the doors opened—I stood there idle, irritated, and angry.
Finally, the elevator arrived. The doors opened, and people began stepping on. But I wasn’t ready. My belongings were scattered across the bench behind me, and I scrambled to gather them. I panicked, yelling, “Hold the door! I’m coming!”
The doors hesitated for a moment, but as I fumbled to pull my things together, they began to close again. I yelled louder, “Hold the door! Please, I’m coming!” But the doors couldn’t stay open forever. Slowly, they pulled shut—and just like that, I missed the elevator.
I stood there, stunned. Angry. Frustrated. I wanted to blame someone—anyone—for letting the doors close on me. I wanted to point fingers at the people inside, at the elevator itself, at the universe. But deep down, I knew the truth: it wasn’t anyone else’s fault. It was mine.
I wasn’t ready.
I had spent so much time complaining about how long the elevator was taking that I hadn’t done the one thing I could control: *prepare myself for its arrival. Even though it was just a dream, it hit me hard. It wasn’t really about an elevator at all—it was about life.
The Waiting Period
How many times in life do we find ourselves in a holding pattern? Waiting for the next opportunity, the next big break, the next “elevation” to the next level? And how often do we spend that waiting period doing nothing but complaining?
We get so caught up in the frustration of waiting that we forget to prepare. We stand still, idle, watching the clock tick, growing more impatient by the second. We focus on what hasn’t come yet, instead of using the time we have to get ready for what’s on the way. But here’s the truth: the waiting period is not wasted time. It’s preparation time.
What My Dream Taught Me
In my dream, I missed the elevator because I wasn’t ready when it came. And that’s exactly what happens in life when we fail to prepare. Opportunities don’t wait for us to get ready. When the doors open, we have to be ready to step on.
The lesson was clear: I needed to stop complaining about the wait and start preparing for what’s to come. I needed to stop blaming the circumstances, the timing, or other people, and take responsibility for my own readiness. Because here’s the thing: the elevator will come. The opportunity will arrive. The question is, will you be ready to step on when it does?
Don’t Miss Your Elevator
This dream was a wake-up call for me, and maybe it can be one for you too. If you’re in a season of waiting right now, don’t waste it. Don’t stand idle, complaining about how long it’s taking. Use this time wisely.
-
- Gather your things. What do you need to be ready for the next level? Is it a skill you need to sharpen, a mindset you need to shift, or a relationship you need to nurture? Start working on it now.
- Get your heart and mind in the right place. Waiting can be frustrating, but it’s also an opportunity to reflect, to grow, and to prepare. Use this time to align yourself with your purpose.
- Trust the process. The elevator might take longer than you expected, but it’s coming. And when it does, you’ll be ready.
Life is full of elevators—moments of opportunity that can take us to the next level. But those moments don’t wait for us to get ready. They come when they come, and it’s up to us to be prepared. So, my advice to you (and to myself) is simple: Don’t miss your elevator.
Stop standing still, staring at the clock, and complaining about the wait. Start preparing now for what’s to come. Because when the doors open, you’ll want to be ready to step on without hesitation. The elevator is coming. Your elevation is coming. Will you be ready?
Take a moment to reflect: What are you waiting for in life right now? And what can you do today to prepare for it? Share your thoughts in the comments—I’d love to hear how you’re getting ready for your next level.
